Today has been a full day and not an easy one. I went to Indianapolis to attend my brother-in-law’s funeral. It was a military service. He had served in the Navy, and the ceremony carried a sense of formality and honor. It was moving and an appropriate funeral with flag at half mast, bells ringing, color guard firing salute, presentation of the flag.
In the midst of that, life continues to move forward in other ways.
Yesterday at writers’ group I read part of Chapter 9 of my Lincoln novel. There wasn’t time to read the entire chapter. It’s quite long. I already broke it into two chapters. But the portion I read was well received. That was encouraging, especially as this part of the story continues to build in tension.
I also wrote a new scene for that chapter, and it will probably still need some work. I didn’t get the chance to read it to the group yet. I suspect it will need a substantial rewrite. It is the nature of new scenes. The danger to Lovejoy at this point in the story is palpable. He and the defenders are becoming overwhelmed. His enemies are plotting to blow up the warehouse and kill him.
As I begin these weeks away from work, I want to use the time well–to make steady progress, without losing the rhythm of the days. Some days will be more productive than others. Some will be shaped by things outside of writing. But the work will continue alongside all of it.
Current projects:
- My book: revising and continuing Chapter 9 & 10
- Edward Bryant: continuing to review stories for the next publication.
Writing does not happen apart from life. It moves within it.
Thanks for reading and walking alongside me.
