Choosing the Next Edward Bryant Story for Publication

I received a wonderful response in the Friends of Ed Facebook group to question I had asked about which of Ed’s stories to publish next. Instead of selecting just one, the author suggested several for different reasons. While She Was Out was mentioned as a strong hard-boiled crime story. giAnts was suggested as one of his classic science fiction tales. Sad Last Love at the Diner of the Damned was described as a kind of twisted horror romance, and Dark Angel was mentioned as the introduction to one of his most memorable characters, Angie Black. It was a very helpful and thoughtful post.

Reading that list, I was reminded again of the fantastic range of Ed’s work. His stories don’t fit easily into a single category. He could, and did, write about everything. That, of course, is part of what makes choosing among his collection both interesting and difficult.

Also this part week, a few of my friends and I gathered to watch the Oscars. Some of the films recognized had begun as books first, and it is always fun to see how stories move from one form to another–from page to screen, from a writer’s imagination to a wider audience.

It can in some ways be compared to selecting a story for publication. It feels like part of the same process. It begins with reading, then choosing, then preapring the work so it can reach readers again.

Current projects:

  • My book: continue work on Chapter 8
  • Edward Bryant: reviewing the recommended stories and considering the next publication

Stories take many paths and forms, but they all begin with someone choosing to tell them.

Thanks for reading and walking alongside me.
