Choosing the Next Story

Soon I will be doing this for both Ed and I’s work, but today I’m talking about Ed. This week I’ll begin rereading several of Ed’s stories to decide which one should be next for publication. I asked the Friends of Ed group for suggestions, but in the end, the decision rests with me.

That’s as it should be.

Editorial work requires a different kind of listening than drafting fiction. I’m looking not only for quality, but for fit–which story speaks clearly now, which one represents his range well, which one will invite readers further into his work.

Selection is not about popularity, it’s about judgment. It means weighing tone, theme, and timing. it means knowing the body of work well enough to see how the pieces relate to one another.

At the same time, I’ll be preparing to revise again tomorrow. Drafting and stewardship run alongside each other–on creative, one curatorial–but both demand attention.

Current projects:

  • My book: drafting and revising this week
  • Edward Bryant: selecting the next story for publication

The work moves forward.

Thanks for reading and walking alongside me.
